Images for this exhibition
Aukje Koks (b. 1977) manipulates objects by painting them, cutting them out, fastening them to the wall or gluing them to canvases. Time and again she challenges the historically charged art of painting. In her work, paintings become installations and vice versa. Sculptures created away from the canvas are invariably brought back to it again. Despite nods and winks to the classics of art history, her work is never heavy or difficult. She depicts everyday objects in poetic and disconcerting combinations. For this exhibition at the GEM, Koks has created a brand new group of works that show, in combination with earlier examples, how she continues to explore the limits of the medium.
