What measures have The Hague Museum of Photography and GEM introduced in response to COVID-19 (coronavirus)?
The Hague Museum of Photography and GEM are keen to ensure that your visit is as safe and responsible as possible at this time of COVID-19 (coronavirus). We have therefore introduced a number of measures and made changes to the way you visit the museum, in compliance with the official guidance (RIVM) and the ‘Safe and responsible reopening of museums’ protocol drawn up by the Dutch Museums Association. This protocol, a set of special measures and a number of changes to the building will ensure that you can safely enjoy your visit, and that our staff, volunteers and suppliers can work safely at the museum.
What general hygiene measures have been introduced?
To guarantee your safety, we are complying with the hygiene rules applicable throughout the country:
• Wash your hands whenever you have had contact with places where other people have been, before leaving the house, when you arrive home, after blowing your nose, before eating and after you have used the toilet. Wash with soap and water for 20 seconds, then dry your hands using a paper towel or hand dryer. Throw the paper towel away immediately in a closed waste bin.
• Cough and sneeze into the crook of your elbow. Use paper tissues to blow your nose and throw them away immediately in a closed waste bin, then wash your hands.
• Do not shake hands.
• Stay 1.5 metres away from other people.
• Stay home if you have cold symptoms (such as a blocked or runny nose, sore throat, slight cough or increased body temperature up to 38 degrees), fever and/or shortness of breath.
• If anyone in your household has a fever and/or shortness of breath, all members of the household should stay home.
What impact will the coronavirus measures have on my visit?
A number of specific conditions apply to museum visits:
• We ask visitors from the age of 13 to wear a mouth mask.
• Do not come to the museum if you are unwell. We will be happy to welcome you to the museum once you and all other members of your household have been free of symptoms for 24 hours. When you enter the museum a member of staff will ask you some questions about your health. If necessary, you can change your reservation at no extra cost by calling 070-3381192 or e-mailing email@example.com.
• You are not obliged, but recommended to book a ticket in advance of your visit, even if you are a Friend of the museum, or have a Museumkaart, Bankgiro Loterij VIP card, Rembrandtpas, Ooievaarspas, Rotterdampas or ICOM card.
• When you book your ticket you will be asked to choose a time slot. Please arrive on time.
• Please use the hand sanitizer provided at the entrance, the toilets and restaurant Gember.
• Coats may be hung in our unattended cloakroom or stored in a locker. To ensure that coats do not touch, only a limited number of hooks are available for use. The number of lockers available is also limited. We therefore advise you to come without a coat or bag if possible. Bags up to A4 size may be taken into the museum. If you really are unable to leave your bag at home, use a locker. You can pick up a disinfected key at the ticket office.
• You must pay using a bank card or smartphone in the restaurant.
• Our staff are there to ensure the safety of the art and compliance with the coronavirus measures. Your cooperation is kindly requested. They are there to help you.
What can I do to make my visit as safe and pleasant as possible?
At the moment, a museum visit will differ from what you are used to. Please read the above rules carefully before your visit, do not leave home if you have any symptoms of illness, and stay 1.5 metres away from other people. Remain pleasant and considerate towards others at all times, and enjoy your visit!
I am not able to come to the museum at the moment. Can I still enjoy the collection?
Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to visit a museum at the moment. Luckily, however, GEM and the Museum of Photography can now be visited online. On the Instagram and Facebook accounts of the Museum of Photography you will find a series of ‘Photo Stories’ (in Dutch only) about works in our collection. On www.kunstmuseum.nl you will find virtual tours and mini-exhibitions by our curators and their colleagues from Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
How long will the special rules apply at the museum?
That is impossible to say, unfortunately. Our rules are based on the national measures introduced in response to the coronavirus, and other measures specifically for the museum sector. We cannot therefore indicate at this stage when the measures will no longer apply to our museum.
I would really like to support the museum during this period. What can I do?

TIME SLOTS AND TICKETS
What is a time slot?
You are not obliged, but recommended to reserve a time slot for the day you wish to visit the museum. A time slot gives a fixed time for the start of your visit, designed to ensure that we do not have too many people in the museum, and that visitors can easily stay 1.5 metres apart. The time slot is a period of 30 minutes (e.g. 10:00 to 10:30) during which you may enter the museum. A reservation guarantees you can start your visit at the time you prefer.
I am not able to book online. Can I also order tickets by phone?
You may also reserve your ticket by phone. Simply call 070-3381192 during office hours (Monday-Friday, 09:00 to 17:00). Please note: you will need to give a valid, working email address in order to receive your e-ticket.
Can I buy a ticket at the museum?
There are no tickets available at the box office, you can only visit the museum with an online reservation. If you are unable to order a ticket online, call 070-3381192 (Monday-Friday, 09:00 to 17:00), and a member of staff will be happy to help you.
Do Friends of the Museum and holders of a Museumkaart, Bankgiro Loterij VIP Card, Rembrandtpas, Ooievaarspas, Rotterdampas or ICOM Card also have to reserve a time slot?
You are not obliged, but recommended to arrange a ticket and time slot online in advance. As we regulate the number of people in the museum, only a reservation guarantees you can start your visit at the time you prefer. Reservation is free of charge.
I will be coming with children under the age of 18. Do I also need a reservation for them?
You are not obliged, but recommended to arrange a ticket and time slot online in advance. As we regulate the number of people in the museum, only a reservation guarantees you can start your visit at the time you prefer. Children may visit the museum free of charge, as always.
What should I do if I arrive too late/early for my time slot?
You are urgently requested not to arrive at the museum too late or too early. If you arrive too late, please ask a member of staff if it is still possible to visit the museum.
Can I book a tour / visit the museum in a group?
Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to book a tour or visit the museum in a group.
How far in advance can I reserve my ticket?
You can reserve up to four weeks in advance. It is not possible to reserve further in advance, unfortunately, as we cannot predict what coronavirus measures will be in force any further in the future.
Can I buy a combination ticket for the Museum of Photography / GEM and Kunstmuseum Den Haag?
No, unfortunately that is not possible at the moment. You can however reserve a time slot for Kunstmuseum Den Haag immediately following your visit to the Museum of Photography / GEM, via www.kunstmuseum.nl.
I have reserved a ticket but I am ill. Can I change or cancel my booking?
You may change your booking, free of charge, by calling 070-3381192 or e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
How long may I spend at the museum?
You can stay as long as you like.
There are lots of doors in the museum. Is it safe to touch them?
We have opened as many doors as possible so that visitors do not need to touch them. Some doors cannot be left open, however, because of the climate control system in the galleries. All contact surfaces in the museum, including handles and door plates, are cleaned once an hour.
Are there exhibitions or collection items that cannot be viewed?
All exhibitions and items from the collection which are on display can be viewed.
I only want to visit GEM or the Museum of Photography. Is that possible?
It is possible to only visit GEM or the Museum of Photography. You can also visit both.
Will I be able to use the cloakroom and lockers?
Coats may be hung in our unattended cloakroom. Capacity is however limited, as coats must be hung far apart. We therefore advise you to come without a coat or bag if possible. Bags up to A4 size may be taken into the museum. You may stored your coat or bag in a locker, but again, capacity is limited. You can pick up a disinfected key at the ticket office for a deposit of €2. Lockers and keys are cleaned after use.
Are refreshments available at the museum?
Refreshments are available at restaurant Gember / The rules set out in the national hospitality industry protocol apply in the restaurant. They are on display on a board at the entrance. You are politely requested to observe these rules.
Are the toilets open?
Yes, our toilets (including our disabled access facilities) are open. They are down the stairs beside the ticket office (a lift is also available).
Are there activities for children at the moment?

Is the museum shop open?
A limited range of exhibition catalogues, photobooks and photo cards are on sale at the ticket office in the lobby. The range is much smaller than before, and can be found on a display beside the ticket desk. The member of staff on the ticket desk will take payment for your purchase(s) (by card only).
I have difficulty walking/I am in a wheelchair. Can I visit the museum?
